The Problem of Apnea

Apnea is a condition in which one fails to breath. What happens with breath?

Respiration is a process in which the digested nutriants release energy by the oxidation reaction. The fuel food as glucose in the cells of body react with the oxgen which carries by the blood from lungs change in to carbondioxide, water and energy. This is the energy that we used in our movements and other activities of our body.

The process of respiration take place in two steps, first is Breathing and second is cellular respiration.

Exchange of gases through the lungs is called breathing. This process is completed in to steps, Inspiration and Expiration.

Inspiration:

We breath-in the air which is a mixture of Nitrogen 80%, Oxygen 20% , Carbondioxide 0.04% and many other gases in small proportion. In them Oxygen is the gas we needed for respiration. When the Alveoli in the lungs filled with the air, the oxygen from the air absorbe into the blood through the walls of the lungs by a process call, Defusion. This process take place due to the difference in proportion of oxygen between air and the blood.

Expiration:

On the other hand the proportion of carbondioxide in the air is very small 0.04% then that of the blood. This difference of the proportion of Carbondioxide makes the CO2 of the blood to flow towards the air in the lungs. This carbondioxide saturated air we breathout. This process is called, Expiration.

When oxygenated blood passes by the cells the oxygen is absorbe by the cell and carbondioxide released into blood stream. The digested fuel food which has change into ATP molicules inside the cell release energy after react with oxygen.

In apnea, the breathing process of the body is blocked. This can occur due to many different causes including mechanical blockage of wind pipe, Trachea that can occur due to choking. It can also be caused by inflammation owing to an allergic reaction causing the wind pipes to expand and block. Additionally, another important reason can be either due to drug abuse or due to voluntarily holding one’s breath.

When apnea starts, the cellular respiration is not at all effected at first as the body keeps a store of extra oxygen in the lungs. It takes some time for other bodily processes to show that effects of apnea.  Many problems can arise due to apnea. It is important to understand the mechanics of air exchange before one can truly decipher the problems.

Due to any reason, if the air passage is blocked, the lungs keep extra air as reservoir so the blood absorbs that air but due to lack of replenishment, the pressure in the lung starts to fall and this can cause lung collapse. The second thing and another huge problem is carbondioxide. When the pressure falls in the lungs, carbondioxide levels starts to rise as it is not released leading to it attaining the same partial pressure in lung and the blood. As a result, blood no longer releases it into the lung and leads to another problem, respiratory acidosis. One must always try to avoid getting apnea and must consult doctor immediately when symptoms start to appear.
