All-America guard Jimmer Fredette scored 34 points Saturday to power #3 seed Brigham Young (32-4) to an 89-67 victory over #11 seed Gonzaga in a third-round game of the NCAA Tournament in the Pepsi Center. Fredette sank a 3-pointer with 11:31 left in the first half to give BYU an 18-17 and the Cougars never trailed the rest of the game. The crowd reverberated with chants of “You Got Jimmered,” “You Got Jimmered” as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
BYU advances to the Sweet 16 from the Southeast Region to play Florida on March 24 in New Orleans while the 25-10 Bulldogs finish a remarkable season, in which they rallied from third place in the West Coast Conference a month ago, to capture the WCC Tournament crown and upset No. 6 seed St. John’s in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on March 17. Sophomore forward Elias Harris and senior guard Steven Gray led Gonzaga in scoring with 18 points apiece while junior center Robert Sacre added 17 points.
