Berkeley Playhouse’s 2010 production of Disney’s “Aladdin” was recently honored with a number of nominations by the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle.  Those recognized for their work on “Aladdin” (in the category of Theatres Over 300 Seats / Musicals) were Jennifer King for Outstanding Direction; Nina Ball for Outstanding Set Design; Julia Kwitchoff for Outstanding Costume Design; Jenna Davi (“Jasmine”) for Outstanding Female Lead in a Musical; and Hannah Dworkin (“Magic Carpet”) for Outstanding Supporting Female Performance.  The production was also honored with a nomination for Outstanding Overall Musical Production.

The Critics Circle gives awards for excellence in three categories: Theatres with (1) 99 seats or less;  (2)  100-300 seats; and (3) Over 300 seats. Representing the print and electronic media, 28 members of the Critics Circle voted for 36 Drama awards and 38 Musical awards from 400+ nominated actors, designers, productions and more, from shows they reviewed in 2010. During that year, over 400 productions were seen by Circle critics, from Santa Cruz to Santa Rosa, San Francisco to Concord.  Winners will be announced at the Critic Circle’s annual awards ceremony on April 4, 2011.

“It is so exciting to be nominated with Berkeley Repertory, ACT, Theatre Works and others,” says Elizabeth McKoy, Founding Artistic Director of Berkeley Playhouse.  “After only three seasons of producing professional shows, these nominations affirm that Berkeley Playhouse will be a mainstay in the theatre community for a long time to come.”

“Aladdin,” which ran at Berkeley Playhouse August 7-September 5, 2010, was directed by Jennifer King with music direction by Amy Dalton and choreography by Dane Paul Andres.
