INDOT

INDOT: The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Tipton Subdistrict's 26 drivers are attempting to clean the ice and snow from nearly 1100 miles of roadway. The overnight mixture of sleet, snow, freezing rain and high winds left roadways covered and slick.

North and southbound lanes are more problematic because of strong winds blowing the winter mix across the roads. Some east-west roads have been plowed down to the pavement. A rise in temperature and light drizzle around 4 a.m. appears to have glazed over the snow surface and drifting seems to be dying down. Winds continue blowing, however, and crews are only chemically treating hills, curves, towns and areas safe from drifting. If weather cooperates, drivers might try to melt roadway accumulation around daybreak.

The subdistrict will continue a second full shift at noon, although it has not yet been determined if they will be working a full 12-hour shift. Subdistrict officials will be monitoring weather and roadway conditions throughout the morning and afternoon.

Although roadways are in good shape considering the weather conditions, drivers should remain cautious. Some roadways will remain icy as INDOT crews work into the day.

Motorists can monitor changing road conditions by phone or computer by calling 800-261-ROAD (7623) or viewing www.trafficwise.in.gov online.

Allowing plenty of time to reach your destination will prevent putting yourself and others in a dangerous situation by driving too fast. For more information and tips on driving in winter weather, go online to http://www.winterdrivingsafety.in.gov.

The Tipton Subdistrict operates units in four locations: Tipton, Kokomo, Westfield and Fortville. The four units maintain roadways in Howard, Tipton, Hamilton, Grant and Madison Counties as well as portions of surrounding counties.
