Who is Esperanza Spalding? Esperanza Spalding has won the Best New Artist Grammy, beating out Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, Drake and Justin Bieber.Esperanza Spalding primarily known as a jazz bassist, the Portland, Ore., native has been a professor at Berklee College of Music and has recorded with M. Ward.

Her most recent album, 'Chamber Music Society,' was recorded in 2010 and features Spalding's vocals and upright bass playing. 2011 is already looking great for the young singer and we wish her continued success.

Although cameras quickly cut away, Bieber's disappointment at the announcement seemed clear. The AP reports Spalding had just one Grammy nomination entering the show's 53rd annual ceremony Sunday night.

"From the time Esperanza Spalding appeared on the scene in 2005, the dynamic singer, bassist, composer and arranger has been heralded as jazz's next big thing," the AP wrote in a lead-up to the Grammys. "Her impressive musicianship has won her White House recital dates, praise from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, and critical acclaim.
