The American Idol 2011

The American Idol 2011 premiere is here – time to kick off season 10 of American Idol, with auditions in New York and New Jersey. Check out this recap from the American Idol New York and New Jersey episode.

First up, a look at all the rumors that swirled about new judges… and then, the official announcement about who would judge season 10.

Idol runs down the awesomeness of Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez – hey, they’re qualified, whatya know? Oh yeah, and there’s Randy Jackson too.

More people auditioned than ever before… first up, let’s look at New Jersey.

Rachel Zevita auditioned in season 6 and was cut first day of Hollywood. Sang “Hallelujah” – Jennifer says that this wasn’t the best audition, but she knows she can sing. Steven says he thinks she’s got it, but needs to redirect it. She’s through to Hollywood.

Caleb Hawley – Steven Tyler sings along and he loves it. Jennifer likes the tone of his voice; Randy was a fan too… all vote him through to Hollywood.

Kenzie Palmer, 15 – she’s in a performing art school and into musical theater. Steven said she sang beautifully, but wasn’t feeling the pizzazz. Jennifer disagreed, but Randy seemed to side with Steven.

A series of yes answers, but we don’t get to hear their auditions.

Achille Lovle – so weird. Steven tells her to “pull those wild horses in.”

Tiffany Rios – shows us the Jersey hair tease, has star boobs (I know, right?)… and starts crying at the sight of Jennifer Lopez. She sings an original song about why she should be an American Idol, then busts into a Celine Dion song, and the judges praise her good voice and energy. She’s through to Hollywood.

And some duds… including Melkia Wheatfall, who is beyond awful.

Robbie Rosen, 16 – says he was singing very early and had to be in a wheelchair when he was in kindergarten, but is all good now. He’s been watching American Idol since he was 7. Robbie sings “Yesterday” and they’re all very happy with his singing. Easy pass to Hollywood.

Rundown of wannabes and the judges they most want to meet.

Chris Cordeiro – the boy scout sings My Way by Sinatra… and, it’s not good.

A stream of bad news… and then some guy burping from nerves.

Michael Perotto, aka burping man, sings “Proud Mary” – he should stick to burping. Steven asks if he ate paint chips as a kid.

Ashley Sullivan
– she loves Brittany Spears. She sings “Gimme Gimme” and was a little aggressive, maybe? She begs her way to Hollywood, somehow winning over J-Lo and Steven Tyler with her brand of desperation.

Victoria Huggins, 16 – wow, she is dripping in sugary sweetness. Lopez gives her a yes, lord knows why and she gets a yes to the Hollywood round.

Melinda Ademi – her family is from Kosovo… she has a sweet voice and they all say yes. Thankfully, after a long look at her backstory, she’s actually quite good.

Devyn Rush – she’s a singing waitress in Times Square! Wow, gorgeous voice – that singing waitress gig is paying off! Steven called it delicious and Jennifer loved it. Randy said she has just the right amount of sauce and a really good ear. She’s an easy yes through to Hollywood. I’ll be watching her.

Jimmy Kennedy – um, tone deaf?

Genise Deal – a little sing along with the judges.

Yoji “Pop” Asano – sings “Party in the USA” and it’s bizarre, though he throws in some Michael Jackson dance moves.

And… a perfect way to montage to the Party in the USA.

Some more duds…

Brielle Von Hugel, 16 – her dad is a doo wop singer and she dedicates her audition to her father. She sings Endless Love. Steven said she has a beautiful voice… they bring in her dad, a cancer survivor. She gets through to Hollywood.

Travis Orlando, 16 – Talks about living in a shelter and being around drugs and gangs in his neighborhood; his family lost their home and were homeless. Sang Eleanor Rigby and I really hope this guy goes far! He also sang Jason Mraz “I’m Yours”… Jennifer said he has a sweet tone in his voice and he gets three yes’s to Hollywood!
